The challenge
Bailey curved fascia profile needed to be designed in conjunction with the Tube line while taking into account reduced space and on-site tolerance issues from the tube station. Most of the soffits were above railway tracks and could only be installed at night during limited periods.
The solution and approach
Bailey V-Joint soffit system was incorporated into the re-design as it could be supplied in standard lengths and could be installed in large amounts to adhere to the minimum time slot.
The Bailey V-Plank system was used to bring the appearance of planked soffits from the inspiration of traditional planked designs. The extruded aluminium panel has been used frequently on other modern architectural projects. Bailey V-Joint was also used to add interest and value to the roof as well as the soffits, providing herringbones and coffering features.
The result
Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3 tube stations on the Piccadilly line were completed in time for the 2012 London Olympics and were successfully used to provide better access and a more welcoming station for Olympic visitors and regular passengers!
